PPE Training
“Any equipment, clothing, device or precaution used to prevent or protect its user from illness or injury to any part of the body by physical contact or means of entry to vital organs in the body”
This involves forming a protective barrier between the worker and hazardous conditions, but “Used as the last line of defence”, when all options are exhausted and the hazard cannot be corrected through substitution or design.
Legal Requirements – Occupational Safety and Health Act:
Part 2; 6(2) (c); duty of the employer;
“The provision of adequate and suitable protective clothing or devices of an approved standard to employees who in the course of employment are likely to be exposed to the risk of head, eye, ear, hand or foot injury, injury from air contaminants or any other bodily injury and the provision of adequate instruction in the use of such protective clothing or devices”.
Must be Suitable – Sufficient – Appropriate
Must be worn all the time to protect the user against the health or safety risks for the task.
Part 2-10:1; duty of the employee;
a) As regards any duty or requirement imposed on their employer, to cooperate with them so far as necessary to ensure that that duty or requirement is performed or complied with.
b) To use correctly the personal protection clothing or devices provided for your use.
Shortcomings And Consequences
Personal Protective Equipment does not eliminate or reduce the hazard.
If the equipment fails and the failure is not detected the worker is exposed to the full destructive effects of the hazard.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this training, persons should be able to;
• Know how to inspect, clean and store PPE.
• Ensure of training in the use of the PPE.
• Conform with legal requirements with reference to PPE.
• To determine the measures required to comply with the relevant safety and health legislation
• To assist in identifying potential hazards, and to provide the PPE needed to prevent injuries and illness.
